What an amazing city! There is no way to sum it up in keywords and I have no idea what to start with. So at first, let s try those keywords. First things that are coming up to my mind after a 4h nightwalk through the downtown are: weed, coffe shops, churches, horehouses, coffee shops, weed, weed, weed, coffee shops, weed ...
I know that it sounds crazy to say it like that, but those are my first impressions as they are. Simply amazing and breathtaking!! Vancouver might be the second most weed-friendly city in the world, but unquestionably, Amsterdam is the Mekka of cannabis culture. You see coffee shops everywhere. Just imagine that you walk in a store as if it were a grocery, look at the menu full of the most famous marijuana species and order whatever you like. A guy behind the desk takes a small scale, weigh out your order, then you go to table, smoke it, get fucking stoned, walk away and enjoy the Amsterdam s beautiful scenery. Is it not wonderful? I am a very occasional smoker, but of course, I could not miss such a great opportunity to smoke a high-quality joint in the heart of Amsterdam. You might think that weed must be overpriced there, but on the contrary, it is quite as affordable as everywhere else. And no need to say that you cannot get a joint from White Widow so easily anywhere else. Normally, a classic joint costs 3€, high-quality one 6€, space cookies about 11-15€/p, and one gram of weed from 5-15€.
I also like the idea of having coffee shops and restaurants/buffets of all kind in the same street. So that people can fetch food without any big efforts after getting high. Also I have not seen so many steakhouse concentrated in one area before.
Bad boys go to Amsterdam....
Truly, it looks like Amsterdam offers every lure. I especially liked a whorehouse with nice intimate red windows and ladies “presenting” themselves to the public eye from the street. It is like if you were walking in the street and from a clothes shop nearby waved and smiled at you vivid girls instead of figurines. The location of the sporting house (I found this translation in the dictionary, so do not look surprisingly, I did not make it up :D) was in my opinion also very weird – it was located next to a church :P As if it were not enough, there were two so called sporting houses near to the chuch – now I really do not know what to think about that )
I also liked cute bakeries all around with deliciously smelling muffins, cookies, doughnuts etc. Food in Amsterdam is not cheap, but still affordable. Prices for a normal steaks are from 12-17€, which is very comparable to prices in Slovakia.
The downtown in Amsterdam is also nice and quiet. Walking through historical streets you will bounce into many modern shops, luxurious hotels, restaurants, but also into cheap buffets, fastfoods etc. In a nutshell, there is everything what a tourist needs.
